Vexcom Web Development Has Closed

Unfortunately due to the poor state of the economy Vexcom was forced to close it's office as of January 1st, 2010. We would like to thank all of the clients, employees and partners that have worked with us over the past 15 years. While we can no longer provide development service, we will do what we can in order to assist any clients that have projects which were developed by us in the past. If you need a recommendation, you can contact me at vexcom@gmail.com and I will see if I can point you in the right direction. If you are just looking for some simple web design then go here.

So what happened to everyone?

During 2009 most of the staff either chose to move on or had to be let go as the amount of development work dried up. By December we were down to a skeleton staff of only five people, myself included. We had expanded rapidly over the past five years and had a huge amount of office space. By December we were not even using 25% of the space, the rest remained empty and unused (and costing us a fortune). The economic climate had forced many companies to underbid and take work at a loss just to keep money flowing. We could not compete so our development business, which was the core of Vexcom, dwindled away to nothing. Some of our developers went freelance or started their own companies. Most found new jobs in other industries. I am currently working on some new startups and taking occasional consulting contracts.

I really need to thank all the people that worked at Vexcom over the years. We had the best team on the planet. The people who worked at Vexcom are what made it great and I am grateful to have worked with so many talented, positive and just plain awesome people. I consider myself very lucky to have been a part of it. Vexcom was a small company, perhaps 15 people at our peak, and many more that have come through over the years. We were all very close and it really was like a family and I will miss that the most.

I am working on some start up ideas and taking the occasional consulting contract. As I have over 15 years experience and considerable expertise in many areas of web development and marketing, I am able to provide very valuable insight and direction to companies that are developing or growing an online strategy. The development market has been decimated by the economy and by a flood of cheap overseas IT labor. First the design industry got hit, the development industry was next. So once again, thanks for all of the support over the years and best of luck in all your ventures.

Vexcom a "Lime Green Utopia"

When you first walk into Vexcom’s office the first feeling that hits you is whether you have just entered a "Lime Green Utopia" thats intertwined with hints of royal blue or perhaps some type of modernesque art gallery.

Wikipedia's Utopia definition; "Utopia" is sometimes used pejoratively, in reference to an unrealistic ideal that is impossible to achieve". I think this is an excellent way to describe Vexcom and the people who work there.

The staff at Vexcom is a cozy yet pleasant trail mix of people with diversified yet creative talents. Everyone so different with eccentric personas that are larger than life itself. Their existence is vital for each plays an intricate role that's so crucial to the Vexcom puzzle.

As you walk further through the office you may see beautiful displays of art, Spider-man, Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader or even an extra-terrestrial being moving about. There are green frogs staring at you from every angle.

There are rarely any rough days at Vexcom. In order to spark even more creativity Vexcom has a few recreational items in place such as; fitness equipment, a pool table and a basketball hoop in the company game room. There are always interesting topics being discussed along with innovative clients always walking through the doors. It’s truly never a dull day at Vexcom the "Lime Green Utopia".

Vexcom is currently in the beta testing stages of its new site called “Event Quote”. Paying Homage to the Red Eyed Tree Frog

Vexcom’s company Mascot is the "Red Eyed Tree Frog". Red Eyed Tree Frogs have unique bright red eyes. The body of the Tree Frog tends to be a really bright green color with yellow and blue hues. They also have orange color coordinated toes. They are truly a colorful specimen to look at. So in celebration of our Mascot I thought it would be cool to post a few pics in honor of this cute little guy. Atlanta Web Design

Vexcom is launching a separate and unique site to focus on web design. While our core business is advanced web development and database programming, we have decided to go back to some of our core design work.

From 1995 through 2000, the Vexcom (formerly Creative Visions Design 95-99) team was focused mainly on design projects. Then from 2000 to present became more and more specialized. While the bulk of our work is heavy database programming and custom enterprise applications, we still help smaller businesses with basic web design and ecommerce.

Vexcom Gets Green and Eco-Friendly on the Web

Just this past Monday we launched the e-commerce website for our client "Ecolabel Fundraising". EcoLabel Fundraising is a company with a savvy Eco-friendly mission. Server Outage

As you probably know we had a breif service outage due to a fire at our hositng facility. 90% of our customer sites are back up, however, a couple of our servers seem to have been damaged and we are working on getting the remaining sites back online ASAP.

This evening at 4:55pm CDT in our H1 data center, electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding our electrical equipment room. Thankfully, no one was injured. In addition, no customer servers were damaged or lost. We have just been allowed into the building to physically inspect the damage.

Early indications are that the short was in a high-volume wire conduit. We were not allowed to activate our backup generator plan based on instructions from the fire department. This is a significant outage, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers.

All members of our support team are in, and all vendors who supply us with data center equipment are on site. Our initial assessment, although early, points to being able to have some service restored by mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Rest assured we are working around the clock. We are in the process of communicating with all affected customers. we are planning to post updates every hour via our forum and in our customer portal. Our interactive voice response system is updating customers as well.There is no impact in any of our other five data centers.I am sorry that this accident has occurred and I apologize for the impact.

The Joy of Flex: Adobe Air and the future of the desktop (with Ben Forta)

I always look forward to Ben Forta coming to town. Not only does he always have something interesting to talk about, he is also a lot of fun to hang around with in general and he is a smart and charming fellow.

For those of you not familiar with Ben, here is a quick bio: Many moons ago he was a cold fusion programmer and liked the language so much he joined the company (Allaire) that created it. He became the products evangelist and toured touting the wonderful capabilities of CF. Subsequently; Macromedia purchased Allaire and started integrating Flash and ColdFusion. You have probably heard of Flash, as it is probably the most downloaded piece of software ever created.

Something like 3.5 billion downloads at last count since its introduction in 1996. That’s a lot of mindshare. And I remember in the 90’s when people said “users won’t download a plug-in!”

End tangent, back on track. Ok so Macromedia enhances Flash’s Actionscript capabilities and integrates backend data manipulation with ColdFusion and flash remoting. You can probably see a pattern forming here.

Macromedia had the hottest client-side software around but no back end database muscle to tie it together and deliver a full development environment. With the acquisition of Allaire they now had the server-side and client-side connection.

I promise that I will soon get to all the juicy cool details about what you can do with Flex and Air, and just what the heck Flex and Air are, as I really should have already known but apparently just haven’t been paying enough attention over the past few years.

Ok, where were we?

Adobe.

Adobe has, after some considerable time created the most ubiquitous piece of software around. From version 1.0 in 1993 they have created Acrobat Reader which allows for complex layouts to be ported to any OS. Hence the PDF file extension (portable document format).

Anyway I’m getting ahead of myself again. So in ~~1995~~ oops make that 2005 Adobe acquires Macromedia and takes over the entire suite and move into a whole new realm of the datasphere. Adobe has long been in the presentation layer business, starting with their first product, PostScript (circa 1982) for printer output, fonts, Illustrator and their most famous product (in 1990) which has itself become a verb, Photoshop.

So, graphic artists are already familiar with Photoshop and Adobe, the 800lb gorilla of image editing. Now with this latest play Adobe has positioned itself to become much more than just the presentation layer.

Coldfusion was already a powerful language when Allaire released version 4.0 back in 1998. Incidentally 1999 is the year I finally gave it a try and walked away from php and perl without even a backward glance.

So we have Coldfusion this really powerful backend server software, (technically middleware that works with a web server like IIS or apache, and a database like MySQL or Oracle). We now have ColdFusion version 8 which is a super powerful backend development environment that can do all sorts of cool things with integrated Ajax and webservices, Acrobat integration, captcha generation, rss and atom feeds, etc., etc.

Add to that a huge installed userbase of Flash client side interactive scriptable client applications. Combining the two allow for amazing things to happen, that is the entire bases of Flex and Air.

Now, before I do get into the guts and capabilities of these applications, I just want to fully express the position Adobe has achieved. It’s safe to say that every web designer in the world is well aware of, and probably uses on a daily bases Photoshop, Acrobat and Flash. Flex and Air will bridge the gap, and probably blur the lines between programmers and the designers.

Now, a lot of the capabilities that Flex has are not new. Flex is essentially a collection of technologies (as is Adobe Air) to create rich web applications. What’s new is the complete integration of backend logic data processing and front end user interface.

You can quickly create dynamic interfaces that can maintain connection to the server for live data interaction; this allows you to stream data like Java applets for stock tickers or instant messaging communication. You can create open sockets to eliminate page refreshes and load times.

The Flex SDK (software developer kit) is open source and available free from Adobe, this is a first for this company and has elicited a lot of excitement in the development community.

The beauty of this application is that you can knock out really complex data manipulation tasks very quickly, it gives a huge increase in development speed and easily integrates with XML. This essentially means you can build a complex database application in a day that would take a week using other open source (or commercial) languages such as PHP or ASP.

Flex gives you almost all the power of a desktop application (sans local file access) and it runs right in the users browser, it is the future of hosted applications.

So, naturally follows Adobe AIR which actually creates stand alone executable applications that can interact with the users local file system AND interact with a hosted database application. This allows developers to create hybrid applications which interact with the network and can also interface with users local desktop.

Vexcom Expands

We have acquired the office space next door and have added 4 executive offices and several new "workspace areas" (about 1800 more square feet of space) to make room for our ever growing staff! We will also be adding an enhanced staff lounge with a pool table, some classic arcade games, clunces, wall mounted LCD tvs, a new large indoor bistro style cafeteria as well as an outdoor picnic area with a grill and seating in the shade of the giant pine trees surrounding our building.

Hoteps happy he gets the snazzy new corner office (which he promptly nicknamed the aquarium) in which two complete walls are floor to ceiling windows! He has been doing great things with vexcom and has definitely earned his sweet new digs. As a special bonus Joseph (AKA Hotep) no longer has to share an office with Patrick!

Michael also gets a new window office. We have added a lot of new staff in the past few weeks and are ramping up for a recordbusting 3rd and 4th quarter.

Watch out for new pics which we will post soon after the dust settles (literally) and we get all settled in.

The following has been making the rounds on just about every internal email list I belong to in Microsoft. Here it is to share a little insight with the rest of the world. Microsoft is an amazingly transparent company. Google is not. Any peek is a good peek.

From the desk of a Microsoft Development Manager:

Many of you were asking for the feedback I received from my interview with the former Google employee I hired into ABC Development as a Sr.SDE. Here it is. This candidate is also a former MS employee who left the company and founded a “Start-up” called XYZ. XYZ was purchased by Google and he was hired on as a Senior Software Engineer II / Technical Lead. Here is his take on Google’s environment as well as areas Microsoft should consider improving in order to be more competitive.

1. What is the culture really like? How many hours are people actually working? What are the least amount of hours you can work before you are looked down upon?

The culture at Google is very much like the old culture at Microsoft – back when the company felt like most employees were in their mid 20’s. These kids don’t have a life yet so they spend all of their time at work. Google provides nearly everything these people need from clothes (new T-shirts are placed in bins for people to grab *twice* a week!) to food – three, free, all-you-can-eat meals a day. Plus on-site health care, dental care, laundry service, gym, etc. Imagine going from college to this environment and you can see how much everyone works. People are generally in the building between 10am and about 6pm every day, but nearly everyone is on e-mail 24/7 and most people spend most of their evenings working from home.

This culture changes a bit with more experienced folks. They generally work 10a – 6pm like the new hires, and most of them are on email until around midnight. It’s pretty common for them to be working most of the evening, too.

2. 20% of your time on personal project. How many people actually get to use it? If so, how do they use it? Does Google own your personal project?

“20% is your benefit and your responsibility.”

In other words, it’s your job to carve out 20% of your work week for a project. If you don’t carve out the time, you don’t get it. Your project needs to be tacitly approved by your manager. Whatever it is, is owned by Google. If you’re organized, you can “save up” your 20% and use it all at once. It’s not unheard of for people to have months and months of “20% time” saved up.

Most people don’t actually have a 20% project. Most managers won’t remind you to start one.

3. What are the office arrangements like? Do you have an office or cube space?

Google believes that developers are, with few exceptions, interchangeable parts. This philosophy shows through in their office arrangements which in Mountain View are all over the map. There are glass-walled offices, there are open-space areas, there are cubicles, there are people who’s desks are literally in hallways because there’s no room anywhere else. There are even buildings that experiment with no pre-defined workspaces or workstations – cogs (err, people?) just take one of the available machines and desks when they get to work.

In terms of employees per square-foot, every Microsoft Building 9-sized office is a triple at Google.

Google doesn’t seem to think that private offices are valuable for technical staff. They’re wrong.

4. What is the management structure like (hierarchy)?

There are front-line developers, and then their manager. My manager had over 100 direct reports and is the common case for managers at Google. Managers quasi-own products and their employees tend to work on their projects, but not always. It’s possible for a developer on your product to actually work for a manager in research (a completely different division). This makes it really interesting at review time. Oh and conflict resolution between team members is very complex – the product’s manager isn’t involved day-to-day, probably doesn’t actually manage all of the peers who are trying to resolve a conflict, and likely hasn’t spent any time with their employees anyway.

The overall structure is:

tons (a hundred or more) of individual contributors report to

a middle manager who reports to

a division v.p. who reports to

the management team (Larry, Sergie, etc.)

5. Do they actually have plans for career development?

Not really. There is no career development plan from individual contributor to manager. Basically if you get good reviews, you get more money and a fancier title (“Senior Software Engineer II”) but that’s about it.

6. Who would you recommend Google to? Is it for the college kid or family type, worker bee or innovator?

College kids tend to like it because it’s just like college – all of their basic needs are taken care of. In fact, even most of your personal-life can get tied up in Google benefits. Google provides free or subsidized broadband to every employee. Google runs its own, private, bus lines in the Bay Area for employees. Google provides free or subsidized mobile phones. A college kid can literally join Google and, like they did as freshman at university, let Google take care of everything. Of course, if Google handles everything for you, it’s hard to think about leaving because of all the “stuff” you’ll need to transition and then manage for yourself.

Mid-timers, people who’ve worked at other places for a few years tend to be a mixed bag. For some, this is the first stability they’ve seen after a few failed startups. For others, this is the company that represents a “better” way to run a company than the company they worked at before. Either way, for these folks to succeed at Google they have to drink the cool-aid and duke it out with the college kids because Google doesn’t place any value on previous industry experience. (It puts tremendous value on degrees, especially Stanford ones).

“Old-timers” tend to like Google because they’re the ones who know to take the most advantage of the perks. These are the people who religiously take their 20% time, use as many of the services as possible, and focus on having a “peaceful” experience. They’re here to do a job, enjoy the perks, and that’s about it. They still put in a lot of hours, but the passion of the college kids isn’t there.

7. Please provide any additional information that you believe will help in our battle for talent against Google?

Make the food in the café free. If an employee eats an average of $15 of food per day (the actual average at Google which is closer to $10) it would cost Microsoft $3,750 per year per employee to offer 3 meals a day. Instead of increasing starting salaries, switch to free food. Give everyone else half the merit increases we would have gotten AND ANNOUNCE THE FREE FOOD AT THE SAME TIME. For that quoted $10 average Google provides free soda, free organic drinks (odwalla, naked juice), breakfast, lunch, and dinner (most people only eat lunch), free sport drinks (vitamin water, etc.), and free snacks (trail mixes, nuts, chips, candy, gum, cereal, granola bars).

That single benefit gets people to work earlier because hot breakfast is served only until 8:30. And since dinner isn’t served until 6:00 or 6:30 the people with a home-life tend to skip it.

Google actually pays less salary than Microsoft.

Google’s health insurance is actually not nearly as good as Microsoft’s.

Google has no facility for career growth. Microsoft has more, but could do better. Continuing Microsoft-specific education for things like project management, managing people, communication skills, etc. should be promoted. A structured career plan for each discipline would be great – e.g. training, experiences, milestones, etc. Paths like “Developer to Development Manager” “Developer to Technical Architect” which show what courses and experiences (e.g. being a mentor) are encouraged for the different paths.

Private offices for employees is a big benefit. See this. Play this up. Take a cue from Google and loosen up a little about offices. Let people call facilities and have their office painted any color they want. Have the standard office come with a guest chair and a brightly colored Microsoft branded bean-bag chair.

Google has the concept of “Tech Stops.” Each floor of each building has one. They handle all of the IT stuff for employees in the building including troubleshooting networks, machines, etc. If you’re having a problem you just walk into a Tech Stop and someone will fix it. They also have a variety of keyboards, mice, cables, etc. They’re the ones who order equipment, etc. In many ways the Tech Stop does some of what our admins do. If your laptop breaks you bring it to a Tech Stop and they fix it or give you another one (they move your data for you). If one of your test machines is old and crusty you bring it to the Tech Stop and they give you a new one. They track everything by swiping your ID when you “check out” an item. If you need more equipment than your job description allows, your manager just needs to approve the action. The Tech Stop idea is genius because:

1. You establish a relationship with your IT guy so technical problems stop being a big deal - you don’t waste a couple of hours trying to fix something before calling IT to find out it wasn’t your fault. You just drop in and say, “My network is down.”

2. Most IT problems are trivial when you’re in a room together (“oh that Ethernet cable is in the wrong port”)

3. The model of repair or replace within an hour is incredible for productivity.

4. It encourages a more flexible model for employees to define their OWN equipment needs. E.g. a “Developer” gets a workstation, a second workstation or a laptop, and a test machine. You’re free to visit the Tech Stop to swap any of the machines for any of the others in those categories. For example, I could stop by and swap my second workstation for a laptop because I’m working remotely a lot more now. In the Tech Stop system, this takes 5 minutes to walk down and tell the Tech Stop guy. If a machine is available, I get it right away. Otherwise they order it and drop it off when it arrives. In our current set up, I have to go convince my manager that I need a laptop, he needs to budget for it because it’s an additional machine, an admin has to order it, and in the end developers always end up with a growing collection of mostly useless “old” machines instead of a steady state of about 3 mostly up-to-date machines.

Microsoft buys aQuantive for $6 billion

FRESH OFF A DEAL TO sell his agency to Microsoft Corp. for $6 billion, all eyes were focused yesterday on aQuantive president and CEO Brian McAndrews, the digital adman of the hour at the American Association of Advertising Agencies' first-ever Digital Conference in New York.

In a Q&A with Mike Donahue, executive vice president of the AAAAs and co-CEO of Ad-ID and ebiz for media, McAndrews said it became obvious that Microsoft would give aQuantive the chance to accelerate its vision with an infusion of financial capital and technical resources.

"The key difference between digital and traditional media is technology," he said. "We are aligning with the largest technology company in the world."

Automated Link Exchanges: Easy PR or SEO Nightmare?

Im sure many of you, as I have, receive lots of spam email saying "we have placed your link on our PR4 site! please place a link back on your site." For those of you new to SEO, PR refers to PageRank which is a value assigned by google from 0-10 with 10 being the highest and almost impossible to get ranking. Even ebay is only a PR9! OBL stands for Out Bound Links which are simply links on a page that link to another web site. Pagerank is calculated, in part by how many IBL (In bound links) with each site counting as a vote. IBLs are the same as OBLs depending on who you are talking about - if its your site and the link is on another page its an IBL for you, to the site owner its an OBL because it links away from there site to yours. Am I making this confusing? Sorry, anyway read on.

Now there are a number of reasons why these things are worthless and probably detrimental to your site. Here are the main reasons these things bug me so much:

1) High PR? Not on the page your link is on!
The emails refer to a high PR site which is "domain.com", and that domain may have a decent PR, maybe its a 4 or 6. However, thats NOT where your link is - your link is buried several folders down in their "links"section which usually has 10 to 20 pages with almost no PR and certainly no traffic.

2) Lost in the crowd?
The page that your link has beenplaced on has 100 other links on it. Making the chance of someone clicking on your link almost zero - now I understand that most people are linking to build inbound links for PR purposes, but if your going to go to the trouble of trading links, you might as well go for something that has a chance of being clicked!

3) PR To Spare! NOT
PR is divied up and distributed to all the outbound links on a page. To illustrate this (keep in mind these are bogus numbers for demonstration purposese)

- Lets say that a PR6 site has a potential PR distribution value of 30,000 points - (say 10,000 points equals a PR 4) now theoreticall - based on research I have read and can provide if anyone wants it, if you had three outbound links on this page, each link would receive 10,000 points each and supply the equivilant of a PR4 to each of the 3 pages.

Now, lets say that same PR6 page ads 3 more OBL. Now there are 6 OBL's and each is getting 5000 points each (30,000/6=5000) and now each site is only getting the value worth a PR 2 or 3 passed to them.

Now keep in mind, the numbers here are not accurate and are simplified, however the basis for this concept is ABSOLUTELY VERIFIED AND TRUE. There are several scientific studies and published reports on Pagerank that show this to be true.

Now, on these link pages there are 50 to 100 or more links per page - the PR value they are passing is NEXT TO NOTHING.

4) My links on GarbageLinks.com! woohoo!
Google does not give must credence or value to link pages. So even of the link page has a high PR, the page is not views as "valuable" or "authoritative" by google and therefore has even less value.

5) Dont follow that link!
Its easy for these pages to link to "bad neighborhoods" as defined by the googles webmaster guidelines. The quality of all these automated links is very hard to manage and its highly likely that there are banned sites on the same page as your link will appear! This is a major red flag to google.

6) Gimme Gimme Gimme, I need some more!
The sites that host these automated link farms (lets just call them what they are, i dont care what site its onits a mini link farm) are getting a GREAT benefit from all the suckers that link to them, heres why: When they ask for your link, they are hoping that the suckers out there will put the link into the site on a nice prominent page link there home page or a link page that doesnt have 100 other links on it. Many uneducated webamsters might fall for this and think, "hey great a PR6 site will link to my dinky pr3 blog, ill putt here link right on my home page!" - well the site gets a valuable PR3 link with out much competiton, and the sucker PR3 blog owner gets basically nothing of value in return. This is just bad internet karma.

In closing, while it seems like a great idea to automate the linking process and get your site linked on hundreds of pages using these "link building systems" - in reality it is just essentially another get rich quick scheme - or I guess in this case a "get PR quick scheme" and it will end up hurting you rather that helping you.
